The printers have a straight paper path and will print directly on to board up to 1.5mm in thickness and paper weights in excess of 400g/m. There is an Auto paper cutter which initially makes four small snips to the paper to prevent it from tearing during the final cut. There is also an Auto paper cutter pressure adjustment feature for lightweight papers. A Manual Cutter Unit is available as an optional extra for heavier weight media and board. Roll paper media is accommodated on a universal 2”/3” roll feed spindle and there is an auto take up reel to stop the prints sprawling all over the floor. The printer's versatility doesn't stop here - there are three modes of borderless printing; Mode 1 puts a even margin between prints and makes a cut through the middle of the margin,. Mode 2 doesn't put any gap between prints and cuts on the border, Mode 3 puts a border between prints and trims right up to the leading and trailing edges.
The low pricing of these high quality printers is going to benefit photographers and artists alike. Producing large exhibition prints with excellent quality has now become an affordable option. A new Fiery Spark Professional RIP designed to run on a Microsoft Windows platform, together with other 3rd party RIP solutions will add to the appeal of these printers. The only note of caution is going to be the life of the prints - previous models had a life expectancy of 100 - 200 years as opposed to the 45 - 75 years on these models. I'm sure that Epson will be developing and tweaking this new ink formula over the next year(s). A full in-depth review will appear on photo-i as soon as we have access to a printer. These two printers replace the 7000, 7500, 9000 & 9500 models. A new range of EPSON media has also been announced.
