In the closed position the i950 is more boxy in appearance than the S900 and more compact. When not in use the printer takes up less desk space.
With
the front and rear paper holders open, the printer still takes up less
room than the S900. Interestingly, the i950 rear paper guide is of the
telescopic type, whereas the front paper catcher is a single extension,
a reversal of the S900 setup. The front paper catcher is stored inside
the printer body making it fiddly to extend. On the S900 the catcher pushes
into the fold out flap. There is a finger hole on the tray which should
make it easier to pull out, but my finger kept catching on the ridges
on the front flap. The front paper catcher only extends to 14cm, on the
S900 the extension is 22cm. So why don't the prints fall out? There is
a dip in the tray causing the paper to curl up in the centre, this curl
gives the paper its rigidity and stops the paper from falling.
The rear paper guide folds neatly into a rear box compartment. The compartment is useful for keeping dust and other objects out of the printer. Although I am not keen on the rear telescopic guides, I do like the concept of being able to fold everything away. The paper guide is also contained in the compartment, the markings are almost impossible to read due to the black plastic, I normally move the guide until it makes contact with the paper rather than read the values - just as well.
