Head Alignment

With the printer drivers installed you only need to carry out one further operation and that is the Print Head Alignment. Make sure you have some plain A4 paper loaded then click on the Start button and select Printers and Faxes in the Settings. Right click the Canon i950 icon and select Properties. On the Properties panel select the Maintenance tab and then click on the Print Head Alignment button. A pattern is printed, you must look carefully at each Column and decide which colour has the least lines i.e. the smoothest looking patch and enter the number (-3 to +7 ) in each of the eight boxes.

Select the Maintenance tab

On the i950 I only had to make one adjustmet and that was to set column A to -1, the other columns stayed at the 0 setting. The head was well aligned out of the box.

The Head Alignment process only needs to be done once, unless white lines start to appear on your prints. The whole process only takes about 5 or 10 minutes. On the S900 I ran the head alignment every couple of months, or if I replaced an entire set of ink tanks. I have never encountered any head problems on Canon printers.

The head alignment chart pattern has changed from the S900 - S830 etc., the chart now includes two extra columns for Bi-directional Alignment. This is presumably to accommodate the 2 picolitre droplets on the i950 (the S900 prints using 4 picolitre drops).
