Installing
the drivers and setting up the printer:
With
the print head and inks fitted, the next step is to install the printer
driver. If you only intend using the printer as a Direct Print unit then
you can skip the following. Anti virus software should be disabled and
other applications shut down. Place the installation CD in your drive,
this will auto run. Follow the simple on-screen instructions.

off any Virus detection applications |
Press
the green button to start a simple installation process |
The S830D has a memory card slot so a driver has to be installed for this
too, this is all done from within the same initial installation process.

The
memory card reader is installed |
With
the printer drivers installed you only need to carry out one further operation,
and that is the Print Head Alignment. Make sure you have some plain A4
paper loaded then click on the Start
button and select Printers and Faxes
in the Settings. Right click the Canon 830D icon and select Properties.
On the Properties panel select the Maintenance tab and
then click on the Print Head Alignment button. A pattern is printed, you
must look carefully at each Column and decide which colour has the least
lines i.e. the smoothest looking patch and enter the number (-3 to +7
) in the box.

The Head Alignment process only needs to be done once, unless white lines
start to appear on your prints. The whole process only takes about 5 or
10 minutes. I followed the Quick Start guide to the letter, and on page
20 there is another section called Adjusting the Print Head, using the
printers Operation Panel. I assume this is for when using the printer
without a computer, but this is not made clear in the book. It states
"To print photographs more beautifully, be sure to adjust the position
of the print head ......." As I am testing the printer for photographs
I decided to re-run the print head alignment using the Operation Panel,
this is also a 5 to 10 minute job. Fortunately the figures were exactly
the same as in the previous head alignment routine.
